Availability and Cost
DSL service availability is still in the early stages,
but pricing in some areas has been very aggressive. Prices
can change overnight and differ significantly depending
on the service provider and surrounding area. Local tariffs
and government regulations may also play a role in determining
end user cost. To complicate matters further, some providers
are claiming to offer free DSL service. In many of these
cases however, it requires you to be subjected to directed
marketing or to make long term commitments to their service.
You should first determine what your needs and tolerances
are. Do you want static IP addresses? How fast do you want
to go? What level of service do you require? Do you need
multiple email addresses? Your answers to these types of
questions will help you narrow down your choices.
The cost of your DSL service is going to vary but averages
$35 to $50 a month and that can be contingent upon the various
speed they offer you. Every DSL provider has specifics as
to the purchase or rent of their equipment. Some companies
offer large rebates after your order has been placed. But
in the fine print you find that the rebates are only applicable
when you purchase their Internet residential service and
modems. It pays to shop around and compare. It is the “bottom
line”, service and performance you are concerned with.
The “Lite DSL that is available runs approximately
$25 and up. It is not as fast as the regular DSL but for
light access users it would prove adequate.
